A Note From Our President
Welcome Back. It has been a few months since we published our last newsletter, so I wanted to share with you all a quick overview of where Cathedral Stone® Products (CSP) is going. This year will mark our 30th Anniversary since we began importing Jahn mortars to the United States. Jahn mortars continues to be a key product for us and helped open many new doors for CSP by offering the various specifiers and contractors a laboratory-tested, environmentally-safe product that can stand the test of time – and the elements. We have continued our tradition of providing solutions to your masonry restoration challenges by offering new and improved science-based, laboratory-tested products to include natural mortars and grouts, as well as sustainable paints, paint strippers, biological solution, cleaners and our new 100% VOC-free water repellents.
We continue to be the leading North American manufacturer-distributor of environmentally-safe masonry restoration and preservation products and we don’t plan to stop. My goal for this company is to provide you with the most cost efficient products backed by an Industry leading warranty for all your masonry restoration, repair and maintenance needs. We will do this by continuing to be the only company in North America that customizes mortars by testing the substrate, identifying their physical properties and developing a compatible mortar. Our one-of-a-kind process, ongoing research, eco-friendly product line and constant innovation are fueled by our passion to continually find the best – and safest – method for restoring and preserving masonry.
My pledge to you as our valued and loyal customers, and my challenge to the CSP TEAM and dedicated employees is to help me take masonry restoration and associated products into the next century by utilizing our one-of-a-kind science based process for developing and manufacturing the best, highest quality products which can do the job and provide a safe solution for our customers.
Thanks for being our customer!

CSP Sponsors AIC Reception
and Training Workshop

Cathedral Stone® Products, well known for its broad line of Jahn mortars which are used extensively in large scale masonry restoration projects, recently sponsored and participated in the American Institute for Conservation evening reception and training workshop held in Washington DC. CSP has a complete line of fine repair mortars that have long been the choice of conservators for use in high profile restoration projects. The advanced workshop focused on current practices for preserving outdoor sculpture, preventive conservation measures and working within the varied contexts of museums, galleries, public art and private collections. Conservation approaches for traditional and contemporary materials were also discussed. Local museums and outdoor sculpture sites provided exposure to various contexts and approaches including demonstrations, hands-on testing and mock-ups conducted by Cathedral Stone®. Topics included graffiti protection and removal, cleaning, coatings and materials substrate repair.
The program was designed for mid-career conservators. Participants were selected based on training, experience, balance of institutional and private practice conservators, number of registrants from a single organization and geography. Preference was given to AIC Professional Associate and Fellow members. The course was an enhanced learning experience for mid-career conservators as well as individuals with a foundation in conservation who are occasionally involved in the conservation of outdoor sculpture. Participants all had a professional level of conservation knowledge and at least two years experience with conservation principles and materials.
The workshop was taught by a team of conservators, representatives from allied professionals, such as public arts administrators, materials specialists, engineers and conservation scientists. The lead instructor for this event was Katharine Untch, who has over 25 years experience in outdoor sculpture and monuments. She has worked within the context of construction sites and frequently teams with public art administrators, architectural conservators, architects, engineers and other contractors in managing complex conservation projects. Contributors to the course include specialists from the National Park Service, Smithsonian Institution, the Hirschhorn Museum and the National Gallery of Art.
Cathedral Stone® Products President and Owner Dennis Rude attended the evening reception which was held at the beautiful Museum of the Americas in downtown Washington. He also provided demonstrations and led the hands-on workshop which was conducted at the Women's Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery the following day. The Women's Memorial is a unique, living memorial honoring all military women – past, present and future – and is the only major national memorial honoring women who have served in our nation's defense during all eras and in all services. Dennis was joined by Cathedral Stone® Products Head Chemist Tony Zakrzewski and Operations Assistant Joe Sette who also participated in the demonstrations which focused on CSP's various paint strippers and stone cleaning products. The hands on demonstration offered the conference attendees the opportunity to work with JAHN Restoration Mortars by doing some sample patching and repair of various type stone. The CSP Team was available throughout the day, helped answer questions and provided additional information to the attendees.
We at Cathedral Stone® Products are proud of our long standing relationship with the American Institute for Conservation and look forward to continuing our support in the future.
