Overview
Lightning struck the Starke County Courthouse and badly damaged the building’s stone spire on the west side. As the county’s tallest public building, built in the Richardsonian Romanesque style (1897), the courthouse is not only a landmark but it is also an eight-level tourist attraction.
Custom Solution
The courthouse brought in Jahn-Certified Installer Chip Stout of Nordi Fireplace Center (Elkhart, Indiana) to repair the spire. After surface preparation, Chip used Jahn M70 to patch damaged sandstone. M70 is environmentally friendly and provides a permanent, compatible solution, which repairs and protects the beauty of natural, architectural stone. Jahn Adhesive was used to adhere the dutchman repair atop the spire. Jahn Restoration Adhesive is designed to bond broken or damaged natural stone, concrete, brick, or terra cotta. It may also be used to repair porcelain and ceramic tiles.
Staining was done to blend the existing stone with the Jahn M70—available in North America exclusively from Cathedral Stone—and the new dutchman repair. With just two trips to the job site, more than eight stories above the ground, Cathedral Stone helped to make Chip’s restoration long-lasting and top-notch.
