Cathedral Stone products

In the Lab. In the Field. Innovation.

Overview

As the family church of George Washington and a Union-occupied post during the Civil War, Northern Virginia’s Pohick Church holds a firm place in history. If only the same could have been said for its column capitals. They were beyond repair, so Cathedral Stone® Products was brought in to create replicas.

Custom Solution

The original capitals were so badly deteriorated that they couldn’t be used for the replication molds. Cathedral Stone’s masons first had to reproduce the capitals in clay before making the molds. Masons used environmentally friendly Jahn M150 dry-pack casting mortar, which provides fine replication of detail and true masonry texture. In fact, the capitals looked so much like the original work that Cathedral Stone needed to “age” the capitals by lightly sandblasting them in the shop before installing them.

Jahn M150—available in North America exclusively from Cathedral Stone— can be custom colored and requires just two days of curing, which can be done either prior to installation or after being cast onto the building. In this case, casting and curing were conducted prior to installation.
